After so many years of doing mocking renditions of this song every time my mother put on her Debbie Boone LP, I eventually found that the song had become a not altogether unwelcome thread in the tapestry of my childhood. (And, straying from the topic a bit, I should mention that my brother interviewed Ms. Boone last year.)
I wouldn’t expect others to share my enthusiasm for “You Light Up My Life,” but Patti Smith’s tough, sincere take on the song might be more to your liking. It was certainly a welcome YouTube surprise for me.

Ari Up was on fire that January night at the Brooklyn Museum. In this clip, she tells a story about a Patti Smith tantrum, but check out further videos in the set to hear little stories about attagirls from James Brown, Bob Marley’s predilection for sleazy groupies, Grace Jones taking on a jet-ski, Debbie Harry’s competitive streak, Joe Strummer hanging out in her mother’s living room, and how Barry Gibb was “like my step-father for a minute.”
