Sugar Pie DeSanto “The One Who Really Loves You” (Brunswick 55375-B, 1968)

Having left her 6 year stay at Chess, Sugar Pie DeSanto moved to Chicago rival label Brunswick, and one of her efforts included a cover of Mary Wells’s breakthrough 1962 hit.

More feisty and direct than the pleading version recorded by the 18 year old Wells, Sugar Pie reflects her maturity (recorded when she was 32) and take no mess attitude that was rarely absent from her recordings.

This Adam Curtis article that’s been kicking around is just incredible. If you haven’t seen it already, it runs through the major narratives in the advertising industry in the 1960s, and their parallels on Mad Men. And since it’s Adam Curtis, it moves quickly, fascinates, and of course spooks.
